Note: I’m taking a course this semester called “Writing for the Web.” One of our assignments is to publish a weekly blog on a consistent topic. Since I already have a functioning blog, I’ve decided to use it (in all of its scattered content) to publish a new series: My Hips Don’t Lie. I may interject other posts from a young journalist’s perspective, but this series will run through April.
I get you, Shakira.
My hips don’t lie.
Somehow I don’t think Shakira was referring to a nagging hip injury. In fact, I’m pretty sure it has more to do with her inexplicable desire to dance while she sings. However, I can’t help but identify with the idea of “not being able to ignore your hips” (or at least the left one).
It’s been a long road, what I like to call my “Hip Saga.”
Here’s the condensed version:
I’m a 21-year-old runner who’s been battling hip pain since training for a half marathon almost 2 years ago. I’ve undergone two different surgeries in the left hip region. I’ve seen many doctors, experiencing sides of the medical system about which I almost wish I were still naive. Currently, I’m 7.5 weeks post-op (from a arthroscopic labral repair with osteoplasty) and working towards getting better – for good.
Many people have said to me, “Hip surgery? But you’re so young.” It’s rare, but it’s real – especially in female runners. I know I’m not alone, but I felt a bit alone in doing hours of research the past few years.
So I begin this series for a few reasons:
1. To provide insight: I think the “world wide web” could use a bit more information on real people dealing with real hip injuries. Do you get Shakira, too?
2. To document my journey: This ongoing injury has taken on a massively influential role in my life. I have experienced so much through it – and learned even more.
3. To demonstrate God’s faithfulness through it all.
I’ll share my background with running, this timeline of my injury, updates as recovery continues, and insight that I’m gleaning.
